History

Sweden’s oldest law firm

Even if it is our clients who are at the centre of our practice – not ourselves – we are proud of our long and exciting heritage.

The roots of the firm stretch all the way back to 1878, the year in which Nils Setterwall and Oscar von Koch took over Advokatföreningen, Juridisk Affärsbyrå, a business law firm in Stockholm which Carl Oscar Schlyter had established in 1874.

Besides being an advocate and business lawyer, Nils Setterwall was one of the initiators of the first Swedish convention of advocates in 1885 which resulted in the formation of the Swedish Bar Association in 1887.

The name was changed to Nils Setterwalls Advokatbyrå in 1885 when Oscar von Koch left the firm. The name remained unchanged for more than a century until it was shortened to Setterwalls Advokatbyrå in 2000.

The year 2000 saw yet another important milestone in our history – with the opening of offices in Göteborg and Malmö. Since then, Setterwalls is amongst one of the business law firms with the strongest expansion in Sweden.

For over 130 years we have been a legal partner to our clients and continuously grown and developed to meet their challenges. This means that Setterwalls has stood for the same vision throughout generations of lawyers – that our clients’ business will be more successful.
